Rick Warren to Perform Under Mr. Obama's Inaugural Big Top

While I’m no theologian, if this picking of the Rev. Rick Warren to perform at Mr. Obama's Inauguration were truly for spiritual purposes, any man of salt would pick a universally-acclaimed Nobel Peace Laureate, like an Archbishop Desi Tutu or the like. Covers the spectrum of the globe and is the diametric opposite of any of these TV snake oil salesmen whose glittering Cubic Zirconia charlatanry is so transparent that once again the rest of Earth rolls its eyes and chortles in nervous titters.

But since it’s most definitely not about anything meaningfully spiritual, let’s abandon all the permutations on who has a bigger Jesus and who represents our Krispy Kreme Kristian Kulture more representationally. Remember, even if they picked the Pope himself, would we (gays) agitate because of the Catholic church’s execrable treatment of the Jews during WWII? Not for a second! Nope. Silence, indifference. This is what our adversaries fully understand: unless it effects us personally—and our non-profits can clang their profitable fundraising klaxons, we simply don’t show up. How does this appear to outsiders? That we apparently don’t care...whether it’s enormous issues like the 5 year-long occupation of Iraq with a million dead civilians (according to the non-controversial Oxford Research Bureau), not to mention 34,000 amputee or permanently brain-damaged US soldiers. Not a peep from our corner--only conspicuous disinterest.

I was a panelist last night on WABC in NY to comment on this churl, Nick Warren. The ultra conservative host in NY was quick to bring up blacks in LA as having pushed Prop 8 over the top through their bigotry. He was truly enjoying himself in an effort to foment controversy and contention. Surprisingly, perhaps, I don’t necessarily blame many blacks for their Prop 8 support because I don’t subscribe to the current wisdom our self-appointed gay leaders that this was some freak homophobic tsunami. Here’s why. How is it even remotely possible—given the historical choice of the past election, we gayfolk purposely made no outreach to the vast African American community? How did we so completely choose to ignore the millions of people south of Pico? What could be more screamingly obvious than the fact that blacks would be showing up to vote in record numbers, given the groundbreaking assent of this particular Democratic candidate? Why didn’t “we” (read: our self-appointeds who took millions in cash from us which went where?) ... why didn’t we put even one PSA on TV speaking to this highly populous voting group? One 60 second spot could have so effectively delivered a message, for example, that the Mormon church didn’t even allow blacks or “Ethiopes”, as they so indelicately referred to them previously, within miles of Mormon temples until the late 70’s! Now, that same church wants to tell blacks exactly how to vote!

It is my opinion that instead of protesting and jabbering about religious picks, we agitate to a larger purpose, as Gore Vidal told me last spring. The more we haggle that we know best which brand of minister should be proffered during the Invocation, the more we create adversaries whose wobbly faith becomes threatened. And what does a threatened animal predictably do?

No longer can we let them frame the controversy or the argument in which we jump blindly and emotionally headlong into the pooge pile and wonder why we just slid another mile down the hill. We fancy ourselves to be a creative, bright, and intuitive bunch. Why aren’t we openly guffawing at the proselytizing preachers and their QVC diamonds flashing under the national Big Top? Are we actually taking these mountebanks seriously, ourselves? Have we become equally as brainwashed as the Mormons who prance about for Gawd in magic Mormon underwear? Prickly question to ask, isn’t it?

Let’s put our assets where they can do some real good and view politics as the make-believe it is—instrumental solely in shifting money and power from point A to point B. Want to get the straight folk on board? Think humanity, not gaiety on those scant occasions when we choose to show up. With rampant unemployment and Mother Earth exsanguinating through the melted nipples of its ice shelves, why not champion something which not only effects us, but all the other kids in our national sandbox of fun. Say, for instance, Universal Health Care for all Americanos. Don’t think this won’t wildly excite the “others”. Instead of exhibiting a yawn at universal human issues, we can instead lead by employing our extraordinary creative talents and passions to major ends. We can prove that our alleged narcissism isn’t the only thing that’ll draw us into fray.

I own that my admonitions here may feel unduly harsh, but what can history tally from us in the past 20 years apart from Prop 8…other than having, perhaps, arranging a sofa or two on TV.

Take a listen to what straight peoples' assumptions are about why we’re so cuckoo for Coco Puffs over this. (You can hear this burlesque at: http://www.goharrison.com/Audiofiles/KABC_CurtisSliwa-Harrison-12.18.08.mp3) With all the grand woes hammering down upon humankind, they “hear” us freaking out over what appear to be luxury problems. They see unemployment, fear of starvation, mortgage crises, and worse. We yell we want to throw a wedding and be able to select the nation’s preacher for a TV invocation.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goharrison.com/blog/2008/12/rev-warren-under-mr-obamas-inaugural.html' title='Rev. The recent AP report summed it up beautifully: "On a whirlwind trip shrouded in secrecy and marred by dissent, President George W. Bush on Sunday hailed progress in the wars that define his presidency and got a size-10 reminder of his unpopularity when a man hurled two shoes at him during a news conference in Iraq. 'This is your farewell kiss, you dog!' shouted the protester in Arabic, later identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for Al-Baghdadia television, an Iraqi-owned station based in Cairo, Egypt. 'This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq.'"

So, what do you imagine happened to the horrid shoe-slinger who dared not kneel before the king, but instead flung a smelly slipper? An Iraqi blogger and activist now living in Washington, D.C., Jarrar tells us: "Sources in Iraq are telling me Mr. Al-Zeidi was heavily
beaten, then he was put under arrest. His family does not know where he is being detained. Mr. Al-Zeidi will join other tens of thousands of Iraqi prisoners who have been detained for months or years with no charges, no trial, and no access to lawyers."

For some odd reason, people overseas seem to have a problem with being tortured, bloodied, "disappeared", raped, mutilated, humiliated, and sexually assaulted at the pleasure of George W. Bush. What ungrateful miscreants not to understand the fundamentals(ism) of Anglo-American Manifest Destiny. While the remaining influence of the US Constitution prohibits such behavior by a siiting president of the United States, it is because the spirit of that document refers to men and people, only. Quite clearly, the humans across the Middle East fancy themselves to be actual "people" and expect even minimal international standards. This is where they weren't on the receiving end of disclosure memos from the desk of Mr. Richard Cheney, whom I continue with gladness to call Dick.

Much as the Catholic church's vetting out of agitators in the 14th and 15th centuries by simply declaring them heretics, the same principle so gorgeously here applies. "Killing" as the Commandment forbids is not killing when somebody is a heretic. Then, it's just housecleaning. All one has to de is declare someone a heretic or part of a 2 billion-strong world of icky brown people, and this no longer becomes killing based on our convenient declaration of heretic or more modernly, "terrorist" or "kinda terroristic"... or more gentilely: Eye-Rackie.

Much like real people over here do, dozens of prominent Iraqi political and tribal leaders called Al-Baghdadia TV station where Mr. Al-Zeidi works and expressed their support and compassion. Al-Baghdadia has issued a statement asking for the release of Mr. Al-Zeidi. Blogger, D.C., Jarrar, adds: "I have started an online petition to ask for the immediate release of Mr. l-Zeidi. Journalists Without Boarders did issue a statement last year condemning the kidnapping of the same Mr. Al-Zeidi. I was having coffee at the neighboring coffee shop when Stewart ejected through the doors, freshly probed and radiant.

He then sat at a neighboring table to yap nervously on an incoming cell call, upright and doughy in his chair--flab and sweat nervously soaking through his t-shirt; moist palms gripping the armwrests. After he'd hung up, he began eavesdropping on the private planning conversation I was having about LA's burgeoning gay activism. "Stew" said he couldn't help overhearing and wanted to explain the Mormon position, since we clearly didn't understand. Meanwhile, behind me sat his shiny new Range Rover which chirped as he remembered to auto-lock its doors. Stew explained that as the "right hand" of the bishop, he was in charge of executing the high ideals of Mormon founder, Joseph Smith (whom history records as notorious for being repeatedly yanked from brothels during a lifetime of sex addiction).

Stew, as he invited me to address him, began with the predicable vomitus of how much he loves his wife and the level of purity with which he conducts his sin-free life. The level of hypocrisy would have been laughable were it not for the unplanned serendipity with which he'd positioned himself in front of my eager scrutiny. Typical of someone who feels guilty and thinks they may have been busted somehow, he began blathering a litany of scriptural nonsense--desperately selling us, no doubt, on his unwavering righteousness--lest his unsavory afternoon dalliances leak back to His Excellency. The sheer hypocrisy of this burlesque was nothing more than gonorrheac Shakespeare.

For 90 minutes I talked to Stew. He declared my being gay was purely a bad choice (much like his choice to get jerked off in a gay massage parlor?). This kind of conscious denial makes it unreal enough to be able to dismiss your OWN behavior as a kind of fleeting whim. In short, if "gay" isn't really real, then having gay sex can't be real, either. [Continued after video]

See the exteneded investigative video for "The Advocate" Magazine and HERE! He in a red-faced zeal went on and on about how he didn't know it was a gay bar until some time later. Perhaps after some serious suction of another man's naughty bits, he may have wiped his chin and formulated the notion that this was a gay bar. We can only assume a similar delay in awareness when applying gauze and Bactine to his freshly aspirated anal gland from the wildly adequate Thai massage.

Here's my quandary: Stew is hellbent on hammering the gays down to a nubbin, wiping us legally out of existence, and seeing all that we are vanish from the face of the earth. At his high level in the church hierarchy, he has unique access to policy and to the execution church practice. This makes him particularly dangerous--much like Cardinal M. of Los Angeles, who is also said to enjoy the "love that dare not speak its name". I have Stew's cell number--an even swap for my business card which makes me now vulnerable to the gnashing teeth of the Mormon church. Do I release this globally as he's an "official", responsible for widespread damage and misery, or do I respect his closet, though he'd just emerged with squeaky buttcheeks from a round of adipose hokey-pokey?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goharrison.com/blog/2008/11/mormon-head-busted-for-gay-massage.html' title='MORMON OFFICIAL CAUGHT EXITING L.A. Keep in mind, the loss of Habeas Corpus and Posse Comitatus, coupled with a new definition of “torture” are just the tip of the prickly authoritarian iceberg.

Equally, through July 11, 2006, George W. Bush had enacted 807 presidential signing statements negating or reversing, by fiat, specific provisions in Congressional Bills signed by him. This volume, in those short 5½ years of initial presidency, dwarf that of any other president in U.S. history. In fact, it is greater than all previous forty-one presidents combined, whose signing statements totaled slightly fewer than 600. Both the frequency and tone of Bush's statements have been the cause of much legal concern as they allow, at his pleasure, much of US law and the Constitution to be ignored or circumvented.

In fact, on July 24, 2006, the American Bar Association (ABA) issued the report of a Blue-Ribbon Task Force on Bush's signing statements that concluded:

"Presidential signing statements that assert President Bush’s authority to disregard or decline to enforce laws adopted by Congress undermine the rule of law and our constitutional system of separation of powers... To address these concerns, the task force urges Congress to adopt legislation enabling its members to seek court review of signing statements that assert the President’s right to ignore or not enforce laws passed by Congress, and urges the President to veto bills he feels are not constitutional”.

LET US BEGIN HERE:

"Bush tells U.S. Supreme Court: Manual vote recounts violate U.S. Constitution," --CNN, November 23, 2000. Just two weeks prior to the 2006 midterm elections, Congress passed legislation that permitted the administration to detain, at its own discretion, anyone the executive branch - specifically, Mr. Bush as the commander in chief - deemed to be a terrorist. Once the law was signed by Mr. Bush, both Congress and the commander in chief were on record as agreeing habeas corpus was another quaint and expendable formality. That was rather convenient and timely for the White House because it was becoming increasingly apparent by that time the administration had been sanctioning, even directing, illegal detentions for at least three years before Congress obliged them by providing after-the-fact, retroactive legal cover.

****John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (September 30, 2006) Empowers President George W. Bush to impose martial law in the event of a terrorist “incident” or if he or other federal officials perceive a shortfall of “public order” or even in response to antiwar protests that get unruly as a result of government provocations. These changes would allow Bush, whenever he thinks it necessary, to institute martial law--under which the military takes direct control over civilian administration. It took a few paragraphs in a $500 billion, 591-page bill to destroy one of the most important limits on federal power. Congress passed the Insurrection Act in 1807 to severely restrict the president’s ability to deploy the military within the United States. The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 tightened these restrictions, imposing a two-year prison sentence on anyone who used the military within the U.S. without the permission of Congress. But there was a loophole: Posse Comitatus is waived if the president invokes the Insurrection Act. Quietly slipped into the law at the last minute, at the request of the Bush administration, were sections changing important legal principles, dating back 200 years, which limit the U.S. government's ability to use the military to intervene in domestic affairs.

National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive 51. Since the order seeks to circumvent both judicial and Congressional oversight, it renders unto the executive branch, and ultimately Mr. Bush, absolute power of law.

Executive Order #13422 - Total Control Over Agencies (Feb. 01, 2007) Federal regulators will answer to a new set of Bush Political appointees in each agency, who will determine whether their proposed rules properly serve the Bush agenda. As Peter Strauss of the Columbia Law School told the New York Times, "Having lost control of Congress, the president is doing what he can to increase his control of the executive branch." Bush's administrative power grab points to a serious flaw in the American system: our uniquely powerful, politically unaccountable executive.

InfraGard (2007) 23,000 Businesspeople Get Threat Info from FBI Before Public. In Turn, They Supply Tips to FBI. Two Members of Private Sector Group Say They Have “Shoot to Kill” Permission in Emergency. Today, more than 23,000 representatives of private industry are working quietly with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. The members of this rapidly growing group, called InfraGard, receive secret warnings of terrorist threats before the public does—and, at least on one occasion, before elected officials. In return, they provide information to the government, which alarms the ACLU. But there may be more to it than that. One business executive, who showed his InfraGard card, told me they have permission to “shoot to kill” in the event of martial law.

HR 1955: The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 has a subheading even more frightening: “To prevent homegrown terrorism, and for other purposes.” What other purposes? This bill, sponsored by Bush Ally—California Democratic Congresswoman, Jane Harmon, was passed by 94% of Congress—the majority of which, sadly, are Democrats. And it says specifically, quote: `(3) The Internet has aided in facilitating violent radicalization, ideologically based violence, and the homegrown terrorism process in the United States by providing access to broad and constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda to United States citizens.” Here’s the rub… by purposefully not suggesting that the Internet propaganda is coming from overseas… our Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act… or… Thought Crime Prevention Act’ focuses not on stereotypical shadowy Muslim figures… or even gun-totin’ Timothy McVeigh-types. This bill, already percolating in the Senate, looks to be aimed at the ever-increasing progressive and Constitutional protectionist movement. Representative Jane Harman, its prime sponsor, was one notable Democrat who was privy to Bush Administration torture information in 2002. Its Senate counterpart, S. 1959, is still in committee.

Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD 23 (January 8, 2008) Computer Network Monitoring And Cyber-Security $6 billion built a secretive system monitoring all U.S. communication networks, including all telephone, email, texting, video, Internet, chat, and the capability to record all keyboard strokes as citizens’ type personal documents in their homes.

Federal 4th Circuit Appeals Court gives the president sweeping power to deprive anyone -- citizens as well as noncitizens -- of their freedom. I published this information originally for our radio show.

Vice President Dick Cheney's financial advisers are apparently betting on a rise in inflation and interest rates and on a decline in the value of the dollar against foreign currencies. That's the conclusion we cab draw after scouring the financial disclosure form released by Cheney recently.

As of the end of last year, Cheney and his wife, Lynne, held between $10 million and $25 million in Vanguard Short-Term Tax-Exempt fund (it's impossible to be more precise because the disclosure form lists holdings within ranges). The fund's holdings of tax-free municipal bonds mature, on average, in a little more than a year -- meaning that the fund should hold up well if rates rise.

The Cheneys held another $1 million to $5 million in Vanguard Tax-Exempt Money Market fund, which is practically risk-free and could benefit from continued increases in short-term interest rates. And the couple had between $2 million and $10 million in Vanguard Inflation-Protected Securities fund. The principal and interest payments of inflation-protected bonds rise along with consumer prices, making them good inflation hedges.

Expecting a dollar drop?

The Cheneys also had between $10 million and $25 million in American Century International Bond. The fund buys mainly high-quality foreign bonds (predominantly in Europe) and rarely hedges against possible increases in the value of the dollar. Indeed, its prospectus limits dollar exposure to 25% of assets and the fund currently has only 6% of assets in dollars, according to an American Century spokesman.

The Cheneys' total assets could be as high as $94.6 million, according to the disclosure form. The vice president's advisers say the vice president pays no attention to his investments. His lawyer, Terrence O'Donnell, says outside money managers supervise the investments. "He has nothing to do with it," O'Donnell says.

As for stocks, the couple held between $1 million and $5 million in Lazard International Equity and a like amount in Lazard Emerging Markets. The Cheneys' relatively few U.S. stock fund holdings include $1 million to $5 million in GMO Tax-Managed U.S. Equities III (GTMUX, news, msgs).

Bushes' investments meek

President Bush may be bold in his public policies, but his private investments appear decidedly on the meek side. Bush and his wife, Laura, reported on their disclosure form that they held combined assets of $7.2 million to $20.9 million.

As of the end of last year, the Bushes' two largest assets were their Texas ranch, valued at between $1 million and $5 million, and a blind trust, also valued at between $1 million and $5 million. Of course, it's impossible to tell how the trust is invested, so it could be heavily in stocks. The White House would not make the trust's managers available for comment.

Beyond the trust, the First Family's investable assets are largely in super-safe Treasury notes, money market funds and bank certificates of deposit. The Bushes' holdings in these instruments totaled between $1.7 million and $4.4 million. The president also listed a health savings account worth between $1,000 and $15,000.

The Bushes confine most of their stock investing to their relatively small IRAs and to the president's retirement account from when he was governor of Texas. As of last December, that account was worth $108,016 and was invested entirely in Vanguard Wellington, which owns stocks and bonds. The president's IRA, worth $87,074, includes $30,142 in Capital Income Builder, a balanced fund that's part of the American funds family; $30,866 in Growth Fund of America, another American fund; and $24,219 in zero-coupon U.S. Treasury bonds. Nearly all of the first lady's IRA, worth $8,556, was also in Capital Income Builder.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goharrison.com/blog/2008/11/dick-cheneys-personal-portfolio-we-can.html' title='WOW! At the time of 9-11, over one-quarter (nearly 200,000) of vets who served in Operation Desert Storm had filed for disability related to Gulf War Syndrome (GWS).[1] Yet the Pentagon continues to this day to deny a specific Gulf War Illness. In a senate report published in February of 1994, the government stated that no "SINGLE cause of the [veterans'] health problems" could be found.[2] But can we allow our government to absolve itself of responsibility through the deft use of semantics? On the surface, the government is right, there is not a single cause of GWS; there are MULTIPLE causes. In 1998 another senate report, The Special Investigation Unit Report on Gulf War Illness, lists 12 categories of harmful agents that troops may have been exposed to that could have contributed to prolonged illness, including biological agents, chemical warfare agents, depleted uranium, and vaccines.[3] There is even evidence suggesting that one of the biological agents was enhanced using genes from the AIDS virus. We must question, therefore, our government's reticence to provide assistance. If they admit the causes, why are they not treating the effects? As of January 2000, more than 9,500 Gulf War vets had died from GWS.[4]

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we have been hearing the term used "blowback" over and over again in the news. Blowback describes the unintended backfire on any nation for its actions involving other nations. For example, many cite the U.S.'s continued sanctions on Iraq and desertion of the Afghani people after the Russo-Afghan war in the 1980's as possible motivating factors for the recent attacks. In these cases, our foreign policy has created horrifying, unintended consequences on the American people.

However, blowback does not have to apply strictly to international relations. Any group that suffers unintended consequences for its actions against another group is experiencing the effects of blowback. This latest attack may not be the first instance of blowback that the U.S. is faced with on its own soil as a result of its dealings with the Middle East. For the last ten years, thousands of Gulf War vets have been dying and spreading their illnesses throughout their communities as a result of the U.S.'s conscious decision not only to continue to sell chemical and biological weapons to Iraq up to and during the Gulf War, but also to expose its troops to harmful agents without their consent.

Yet the government has consistently upheld its diagnosis that GWS is in fact post-traumatic stress disorder. This position is insulting given their acknowledgment of the multiple harmful agents that troops may have been exposed to during the war, not counting the thousands of veterans and families that have died or continue to suffer from the disease. To understand the effects of GWS on our troops, I want to introduce you to two Gulf War veterans whose battles with this disease represent opposite ends of the spectrum of the suffering that those afflicted have had to endure. As you will see, these symptoms go far beyond what can be defined by post-traumatic stress even in its most liberal definition. Their symptoms are not caused solely by psychological trauma, but by harmful, material agents that the U.S. government knew were awaiting its troops in the Persian desert.

"There is a lot of shifty business going on." [5]

Scott Siefken was a National Guard and Army soldier who served in the Gulf War and developed rashes after he returned home. Before long, the rashes quickly covered his entire body. The rashes inflamed his skin, which turned red and dry with scales, and itched so badly that he was unable to function in his normal life. When he arrived at the V.A. hospital for treatment, military doctors would not admit him. After repeated attempts÷and the worsening of his condition--they finally brought him in for special treatment. Seven weeks later Scott was dead, having never left the hospital once he was admitted.
Scott Siefkin in VA Medical Experiments

But the worst is yet to come. Because of his condition upon entering the hospital and the type of treatment they chose to perform on him, Scott's case was meticulously documented. A picture of Scott after his special operation leaked out of the V.A. We can see Scott's blood-red face staring out in agony from the white sheets. There is something wrong with him; his appearance is horrifying. This is because the doctors have peeled off 99% of his skin in order to remove his rashes. Scott's face is in agony because he has just lost the largest organ of his body.
Scott Siefkin - 99% of skin removed

How could doctors in good conscience do this to a human being? Did the V.A. really think that this could be a viable treatment? That the entire organ would regenerate itself and Scott wouldn't die in the process for lack of the functioning of that organ? Indeed, it sparks uncomfortable flashbacks of the experiments Hitler's doctors carried out in concentration camps in the name of science. And therefore we must demand, can this be considered a treatment at all÷or was it research? And if so, what exactly were they researching?

Back in California, Dr. Garth Nicolson, Chief Scientific Officer of the Institute for Molecular Medicine, has been studying GWS since the first cases began appearing after the war. He believes GWS is caused in part by a fungal bacteria called Mycoplasma incognitas. By reverse engineering one of the biological weapons known to have been at Iraq's disposal, Dr. Nicolson discovered it had been genetically-engineered and purposefully enhanced with potent genes from the AIDS virus. "We did find this one gene from the HIV-1 AIDS-causing virus [the HIV-1 envelope that the virus uses to bind to and enter cells]. If you were to make a biological weapon this is exactly the type of gene you'd insert into a microorganism. Because you've turned it into a stealth microorganism. It will hide in the body."

HIV-Inserted Mycoplasma Incognitas

The implications of the government formulating the AIDS virus into a germ-warfare weapon was as shocking to the doctor as the growing number of American servicemen still dying 10 years after the war. This altered Mycoplasma fungus, he says, can survive for years in blood, air, and soil--meaning there's clinical potential for others to continue to contract Gulf War Syndrome. "It's an uncontrollable weapon," he goes on, "You can't control what's gonna happen to it once it's released. It's like the Genie: you can't put it back in the bottle. These things are contagious, so they can spread in a population and you just can't easily get rid of them." Because it's rooted in a fungus, it can spread through pet hair--even clothing. Dr. Marwan Nasralla, is president of International Molecular Diagnostics--another specialized medical facility that's able to deconstruct these AIDS-inserted pathogens: "We have examined many [vets] for Mycoplasma and we have high percentage positive. But we did not really analyze which one is have [sic] the [HIV envelope] insertion or not--because it's very costly."

Hypothetically, if the U.S. knew troops would be exposed to previously untested harmful biological and chemical warfare agents during the Gulf War, wouldn't it be to the advantage of our national security to allow at least some of our troops to contract whatever diseases these agents may cause and then to monitor the effects and range of treatments? And is this not unlike how the U.S. learned about Agent Orange during the Vietnam War? What measurement, in the end, shows the human costs of military testing? How do we rationalize--and should we--the horror that Scott had to live and die with?

"I was at the point of freaking out--[I] didn't know what was wrong and I didn't know who to ask." [6]

When I began investigating this story six years ago, I met Brent H., a young Gulf War Marine gunner, who has asked for last name anonymity, ever-cautious of crossing the Defense Department (DoD) on the record. Formerly stationed at Central Command's MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, Brent pulled up his shirt up and showed me his stomach and back covered with red, saucer-sized rashes--inflamed rashes with the texture of fish scales. The condition had been diagnosed by his private physician as Gulf War Syndrome. "These two spots, as you can see," he pointed out for me, "have turned into a whole area. They are scarlet red spots. Every year they get worse. They don't get better."

Patient with Spreading Rashes

What's more disturbing, many of Brent's symptoms oddly mimicked HIV infection; yet he tested negative. This, it turns out, would lead to a nightmarish discovery. Brent went on to show me a grotesque pattern of infections on his chest. He said the DoD had injected him right through his shirt with experimental Anthrax and botulism toxoid vaccines as well as the pesticide, DEET, without his knowledge or permission. "The unit I was in had about 181 people. And they've got the same symptoms. The main thing with us is the rashes. Um, you try to justify it to yourself. You know, if I put some cream on it it'll go away. It just doesn't go away." What is the government telling you? I asked. "When I filed my claim, they told me there was no such thing as this disease. So, just trying to find someone that knows anything about it is incredibly hard. I mean, to find someone who'll admit it exists first of all; and secondly that knows something about it. I mean, that's a long hard· that's a long, hard journey.

In addition to the potential threat from the vaccinations, Brent remembers SCUD and FROG missiles exploding over his head--missiles he thinks contained germ warfare vials that rained down on thousands like him. Freedom of Information requests reveal 36 different strains of deadly pathogens that were manufactured here in the United States--at government contractors like American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Rockville, Maryland--then sold for profit to Iraq

In a Gulf War video taken by the Army's own cameramen, we can see these weapons of mass destruction in the Iraqi munitions center of Khamisiyah--labeled in plain English, with American color-coded identification markings.

Munitions Stored at Kamisiyah

Captain Joyce Riley was part of the Air Forces aeromedical team during the Gulf War, and now represents the American Gulf War Veterans Association. "It has been illegal to export and sell biological agents [since the Geneva Convention of 1972]," she told me, "however, the United States, vis-à-vis the American Type Culture Collection, did provide these to our enemy, Saddam Hussein, just prior to the beginning of Desert Storm." To cloak these sales as acts of humanitarianism, the government has often funneled the weapons through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. The U.S., however, was not the only weapons contractor that sold chemical and biological weapons to Iraq. Other profiteers like Jordan, England, and Russia also had munitions present at Khamisiyah. Such smoking-gun evidence suggests the Pentagon sold weapons of mass destruction to Iraq in direct violation of the Geneva Convention.

But exposure to these biological weapons and experimental vaccines is only the tip of the iceberg when examining the larger scope of GWS. Not included in the 9,500 deaths now suspected from GWS are the infected and deceased family members that the veterans passed the illness onto. The Nation magazine writes that 67% of babies born to Gulf War vets are born deformed, often with fused fingers and toes, some born without a brain. A Reuters news service report of October 21, 1994 cited Senator Donald Riegle's Senate Committee findings that "found disease spread from afflicted veterans to 78% of their wives, 25% of offspring born before the war, and 65% born since." But let's step back from effects for a moment, and look at the likely causes.

The likely causes of GWS do not end with biological weapons and experimental vaccines. For years now, the Pentagon has been encasing its missiles and bombs in depleted uranium (DU)÷the waste from nuclear weapons and reactors÷in order to make their shells stronger. When exploded, the depleted uranium aerosolizes upon impact and scatters this highly radioactive element throughout the atmosphere. According to the Gulf War Resource Center, during the two months of bombings, more than one million shells laced with radioactive Uranium 238÷the scientific nomenclature for depleted uranium÷were used on Iraq.

In Operation Desert Storm alone, some 940,000 small-caliber DU rounds were fired into Iraq and Kuwait from such aircraft as the A10 Warthog and the Apache helicopter. In addition, anywhere from 6,000 to 14,000 large-caliber DU rounds were fired from U.S. tanks. All told, anywhere from 40 to 300 tons of radioactive uranium were left littering the battlefields of the Gulf war, several times the 25 tons that a report by Britain's Atomic Energy Authority concluded could cause "500,000 potential deaths."[7]

Measuring the radioactivity of bullets made from depleted uranium

However, what might be most striking is not so much that the U.S. unleashed all these deadly weapons on Iraq during the war, but that with foreknowledge of their deadliness, the government did not act to protect our troops÷instead, they served as guinea pigs, denied of the most basic human rights. To begin with, General Norman Schwartzkopf testified at the Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee on Gulf War Illness that the botulism toxoid vaccine "was one that was experimental; was not approved by the FDA. It was for that reason," Schwartzkopf continued, " that I insisted any troop that was gonna be given this botulism, first of all, be explained what it is÷then sign a statement to the fact that he understood what this is and agreed to take it. And if he didn't sign the statement, he didn't have to take the botulism anti-toxin. I left it was up to him [sic] because I knew it wasn't an FDA-approved anti-toxin." However, a Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee Report 103-97, dated January 8, 1994, on page 21, says that of the 120 vets interviewed, 88% of troops were forced to take the vaccine, and many of the truths General Schwartzkopf advanced were substantively countered by his own sick troops. In fact, General Schwartzkopf had not been sworn to oath during the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee on Gulf War Illness. That is, he was not compelled legally, by the Senate, to tell the truth.

Gen. Schwartzkopf Explaining...
Furthermore, reports conflict on how often the soldiers wore their protective over-garments during the war. At that same Committee meeting, on January 29, 1997, General Schwartzkopf assured the committee that "They wore their over-garments. They wore their masks. And then they tested the area with devices before they took their masks off and their over-garments off--just to make sure that there wasnât anything there." But Sergeant Dan Tapolski, a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense NCO of the 37th Engineer Battalion experienced a different war. "Way back in the air campaign, [we were] ordered by our battalion commander not to wear our protective over-garments unless specifically told to do so·[I told my company commander] that that was dead wrong, and he's gonna wind up with a dead company if he listens to it."[8] Back at the Veteransâ Affairs Committee hearings, General Colin Powell backs up General Schwartzkopf, "We used protective over-garments, boots, masks. I don't think you have seen a SINGLE battle scene from the Desert Storm War where our troops were not in gear."[9] Who is telling the truth? If we return to the video taken by Army servicemen at Khamisiyah÷an Iraqi biological weapons munitions fort consisting of 100 bunkers and 49 warehouses, each as big as football fields÷we see none of the troops who are opening the munitions boxes and sussing out the bunkers wearing protective gear.

"There is no more serious crime than an official military cover up of facts."[10]
Back at the Institute for Molecular Medicine, Dr. Nicolson slowly began treating AIDS-like chronic fatigue, night sweats, heart murmurs, and rashes, which, like Brentâs, spread down the arms, across the stomach and back. Using a combination of antibiotics lead by Doxycycline÷a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic, he began treating top brass on the quiet. "Two Star generals·are now recovering because of·our information and the efforts that weâve put out to help those military personnel and veterans who are sick." But Brent says the V.A. wouldnât let him or thousands of other vets have access to these medications because then the DoD would be treating something it says doesnât exist. Yet the symptoms list is gruesome: muscle and joint pain, bloating, memory loss, intermittent internal bleeding, lymph swelling, organ dysfunction, miscarriages, depression, diarrhea, respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses, birth defects and still born births, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, even widespread Alzheimer's Disease, Lou Gehrig's Disease and other neurological illness, as well as a frightening climb in the number of HIV-diagnosed patients. Are these the faces of post-traumatic stress?

On the other hand, Dr. Nicolson has successfully treated too many top brass today to keep the truth a secret. A number of Lieutenant Generals have officially compelled the Armed Forces to allow clinical trials using the Nicolson protocol. And Brent, the former Marine Corps aerial observer and combat gunner, now lives in a different city, and told me by phone: "The fatigue is gone and I get a good nightâs sleep. I get a good nightâs sleep. And I feel pretty much back to normal." How long have you been on the Doxycycline? Doxycycline and Lamicil both, for three months." Are those big rashes you had·how are they doing? "They faded quite a bit. Itâs almost completely gone."

After 10 years, the Department of Veteranâs Affairs is no longer able to hide the fact that 26% of all Gulf War vets are now officially listed as "disabled," and U.S. veterans and the American public want answers. The 1997 Senate hearings regarding Gulf War Illness were supposed to uncover some of those answers, but instead perpetuated the ruse. One indication of this occurred when General Schwartzkopf denied ever having heard of the bunker-load of American-made chemical and biological weapons at Khamisiyah. "As I stated, the first time I ever heard of Khamisiyah was in 1996 when it was first announced by the Department of Defense and nobody was more surprised than I was." Yet, in a covert trip some six months preceding the Gulf War, Brent had accompanied General Schwartzkopf to the Middle East specifically to develop strategic computer models for a premeditated invasion of Iraq. Curiously, Saddam Hussein was still months away from invading Kuwait, with no threat known or evident. But the Pentagon was secretly setting up a war. Footage in the documentary, Hidden Wars of Desert Storm, shows General Schwartzkopf before the Senate responding to direct questioning regarding his premeditating war: "and·it just so happened that· that we were in the middle of conducting the internal look·uh·command post exercise at the same time·that·the crisis developed in the Gulf." Again, he was not under oath.

Brent concludes that the Pentagon was eager to test new weapons on Iraq÷and us÷by goading Saddam into illegal action with Kuwait. Indeed, as Dr. Garth Nicolson states, "We transferred a very dangerous material, like Bacillus Anthraxus, to Iraq and other countries as well, uh, right up until a few weeks before the Gulf War·So, itâs absolutely incomprehensible for most sane people to think that, as a country, weâre transferring these very dangerous agents to rogue nations, who can just turn around and use them on us." As the theory goes, if the war was planned six months in advance, why would we continue to sell biological weapons to our future enemy, if not to have them tested on a population that we will be able to monitor after the war?

The deceit worsens. While examining the archives at The Center for the Preservation of Modern History, we found that just eight days before the August 2, 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, U.S. ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie met with Saddam Hussein at his Baghdad palace. In conversation, she assured him, "We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary [of State James] Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960s, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America. (Saddam smiles)." Two days later the State Department reiterated itself publicly: "There are no special defense or security commitments to Kuwait." But on August 6th, four days after Saddam's massed troops invaded and occupied Kuwait, the U.S. already had their first troops in the air.

As our troops amassed at their already-staked-out battle posts, the U.S. Government directed oil-rich Kuwait to employ the huge PR firm Hill & Knowlton to help sell U.S. citizens on the necessity of a "Gulf War." To do this, they created a campaign that involved the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador giving false information to Congress about particular instances of Iraqi human rights abuses.[11]

What hard evidence exists that could support the argument that the U.S. would incite war in large part to create a theater in which to test weapons? One does not need to look very far or deep. Most importantly, until 1997, when Clinton amended the U.S. Code, the United States had the authority to test biological agents on its military and civilian populations without their knowledge or consent. Title 50, Chapter 32, Section 1520 of the U.S. Code required the government only to inform civilian officials of what tests were going to occur. As a result, for half a century the government used its citizens as unwitting guinea pigs for science. Indeed, some experiments have become infamous, such as the CIAâs testing of LSD and Gamma Hyroxybuterate÷the Îdate rapeâ drug÷on civilians; but many are not. Far more nefarious tests have been carried out and kept muted, such as testing the effects of radioactivity on military personnel in Ft. Greely, Alaska; testing Agent Orange on U.S. troops in Vietnam; and funding, researching, and creating an AIDS-like virus in the early 1970s. As Senate Report 103-97, Senator Jay Rockefeller's committee, states: "During the last 50 years, hundreds of thousands of military personnel have been involved in human experimentation and other intentional exposures conducted by the Department of Defense, often without a Service Member's consent."

Today, no one knows how many of the 183,000 Gulf War vets currently on disability are aware of or have access to such treatment options as the death count expands. As a result of long-term official denial, some Gulf War vets have gone to animal feed stores to purchase tetracycline meant for cattle and swine to use on themselves. Even a 550 page Senate report, known as the "Reigle Report" concludes that American troops are not just sick, but they are dying, and that this Gulf War Syndrome is communicable. But perhaps the least palatable is that U.S. companies seem to have spun parts of the deadly AIDS virus into a profitable biological weapon.

So we are left asking, "What was the Gulf War really about?" As more and more documents are found, lies uncovered, and studies published, evidence points to a nightmarish scenario of planned, wide-scale chemical and biological experiments conducted under the pretext of a humanitarian war. As Captain Joyce Riley, of the American Gulf War Veterans Association, sums the situation up: "By God, I wish it wasn't true, believe me."
________________________________________________
*The Archive, at George Washington University, obtained more than 60 documents through the Freedom of Information Act to understand the events surrounding Mr. Rumsfeld's visit. Mr. Rumsfeld, who was then the head of pharmaceutical firm G.D. Searle & Co., met with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to discuss ways to counter Iran and Syria, the documents show. Rub with shortening or butter. With an apple corer or small knife, core out the potato center (end to end). Push hot dog through the center. Bake until potato is cooked through. To Microwave: Place on microwave safe plate; cover loosely (to avoid splatters). Microwave on high about 4 minutes per potato until fork tender. To Bake in Conventional Oven: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Bake for approximately one hour or until potato is fork tender. To Barbecue: Wrap in aluminum foil and place above medium hot coals, turning at least once during cooking. Cook until potato is fork tender. Serving Suggestions: Allow potato to cool slightly. In the Midwest, where oil companies blamed an alleged oil shortage—oil quantities are actually greater than last year at this time. The big 10 oil companies, who work closely with OPEC, are, in fact, responsible for the current level of “price gouging” (legal unless the decision to do so was done in collusion). Oil companies argue they’ve suddenly had to add the expense of ethanol to meet environmental standards. The reality? They’ve had 5 years of planning to meet this standard. Meanwhile, raised prices mean raised profits. According to Public Citizen’s Critical Mass Energy Project, domestic oil profits (1st quarter 2000) were up 500%.

As their registers ring healthily, to the south lay the largest untapped pool of petroleum in the entire Western Hemisphere—pooled under Colombia.1 The amount? Nearly 3 billion untapped barrels worth a hundred oil fortunes to conglomerates whose histories reveal little return to the people whose lands provide it.

With the financial progress of multinational oil companies at the heart of our petro-economy, each new foray into another’s sovereign territory can be looked at with a raised eyebrow and the distant echo of a filling stations’ hungry welcome bell. Many of the dozen or so skirmishes we’re currently “policing” have an odd coincident mineralogical component. Example: The 1.6 billion dollars in military aid to Colombia is less an act of a “drug” war—as we’ve been told—than it is an action against Colombia’s oil-wary villagers who plan to protect their land from being drilled and environmentally destroyed—with subsequent profits headed north. The villagers (called “leftist guerillas”) have become a significant threat to multinational oil derricks whose financial turgidity depends upon unrestricted suction. It therefore, becomes necessary to involve the Commerce Department’s allies at the Defense Department in securing these areas militarily. Pitching the threat of “rampant drug trafficking” always ensures a hearty public backing. “The fact is that we have military commitments there because of the oil. And it has always been that way. [Look at] the president and the previous president. It’s been stated by the military and we have an agreement that emphasizes no other alternatives.” says Ed Rothchild of Citizen Action, a Washington-based human rights organization.

Using taxpayer funds, U.S.-manufactured Black Hawk helicopters, high-end digital surveillance, satellite communications, and assorted weaponry have been sent to Colombia to defeat locals who’ve stated they plan to defeat foreign (U.S./UK) oil incursion and use their own geysers to improve the quality of life in endless suffering villages.

This $1.6 billion of gringo green is made a more poignant public giveaway, particularly when the donor administration, at a White House Press conference May 2nd, claimed there was little money available for education. I collared Bruce Reed there, President Clinton’s Domestic Policy Advisor, as he entered the West Wing:

Harrison: “Is it frustrating when you talk about how poor schools are, and yet there’s a $260,000,000 Pentagon budget? There’s clearly plenty of money. It’s just not going where it needs to go. Is it frustrating to you—I mean, you know the reality of it?”

Bruce Reed: “…W…(pause)….We would like to do… um… (pause)…um …uh… (pause)… We would like to do much more to help poor schools.”

Indeed.

Dying for Oil

When the siphoning of taxpayer loot for oil company welfare/warfare isn’t politically manageable, oil conglomerates often take matters into their own hands—or more accurately, into the hands of others better suited to get the job done, like local military dictators. Several years ago, Shell Oil actually admitted to smuggling weapons in their oil drums to Africa, presumably to assist Nigeria’s former military dictator, Sani Abacha, in “managing” unhappy villagers. According to Fred Smith, editor of Washington’s Multinational Monitor, “It’s kind of convoluted, what exactly the weapons were for and what they were used for, but they’ve admitted that. And they’ve clearly worked with the Nigerian government in that region.”

Having fled Africa to the sanctuary of American medicine in Chicago, Nigerian physician, Dr. Vincent Idemyor adds, “In order to look good here [U.S.], they [Shell] used the Nigerian military to do their dirty work.” Dirty work—in which the doctor says Ogoni villages were regularly dotted with severed human limbs where protesting familes had been tortured or killed by the oil-supported police force. The doctor provided video footage taken between 1993 and 1995—frequently unwatchable due to its sheer human grotesquery.

Obi Ukuna, a Nigerian with a Masters’ degree in international marketing, has been reduced to driving a cab in the U.S. after his village was slaughtered. Mr. Ukuna told of midnight military sweeps. “They killed. It was something you don’t want to see. The village was killed… and the people were cleaned, like animals, by the military.” But why would a military be so willing to commit atrocities against its own people? “The military has always wanted the money in their own private pockets, not caring about what the oil-producing areas [people] get back. They’re just in it for their own private interests.” The Royal Dutch Shell Web site (www.shell.com/reports97/frames/foi_frame.html) has published its own interests with clearly profitable gross proceeds of $150,690,000 for 1995*; 171,964,000 for 1996; and $171,657,000 for 1997.

By the mid-‘90’s, 2,250 of Ukuna’s countrymen were dead. Shell was operating 100 oil wells throughout Nigeria.

Fred Smith, Multinational Monitor: “They were definitely killed.”

Harrison: “So they were murdered?”

Fred Smith: “Yes.”

A publicly-held oil company purchasing weapons with shareholders’ funds, then using them to kill protesting locals who had lived there for generations.

It took six calls from New York to Dallas to get beyond voice-mails for a response to past African weapons-smuggling allegations and Shell’s reported role in the deaths of thousands of native oil protestors. Finally, at 8:30 am while staff were sipping their wake-up coffees, I got this:

Shell: “Are you with the media?”

Harrison: “I am.”

(line transfer, phone rings)

Shell: “Shell Oil Media Relations. This is Susanne.”

Harrison: “I’d like to ask you a question about your oil drilling policies in Nigeria… that Shell Oil was taking weapons into that country and using them against the indigenous peoples.”

Shell: “Well, unfortunately… ah… (pause)… geez… ah… sh*t. (click)”

As a media person I felt fully related to. The response was similar to when I asked the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company’s spokesperson if she’d be willing to offer her own daughter as a test subject for Reynolds’ new “smokeless” cigarettes. These Eclipse cigarettes, I’d just been told, were a healthy choice. What eight year old doesn’t deserve good health?

Viscous Veritas

In 1958, when Shell first discovered oil, the Ogoni people had no say in how Shell would exploit their oil. In the next 30 years, there would be 3,000 separate spills, averaging 700 barrels each. 400 square miles of Niger delta farmland became scorched by burning waste-gases and resulting acid rain squalls.3 Repeated oil spills poisoned rivers dead—which to a population of subsistence farmers and fishermen caused nothing less than indescribable catastrophe. Ironically, Shell Nigeria’s publication, “The Ogoni Issue”, denies any problem at all. However, in the same pamphlet, Shell admits flaring of 1,100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day along with month-long acid to the rains each year.

Little did Nigerian author, journalist, and founder of MOSOP (the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People), Ken Saro-Wiwa, know he’d be inviting the noose around his neck in 1993 when he said, “We are going to demand our rights peacefully, non-violently, and we shall win!” When the journalist organized a peaceful mass protest against Shell, he was arrested, charged with murder(?), given no trial, and executed in 19954 . The native activist became a glaring example of how telling it like it is… can kill you.

Just last month, Ogoni tribesmen finally buried the glasses and pipe of Ken Saro-Wiwa, these few items representing his only known remaining effects. Meanwhile, current Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has appropriately ordered the remains of Saro-Wiwa and eight fellow Ogoni leaders exhumed and returned to their families. This, after Ken Saro-Wiwa’s family filed suit against Shell Oil in U.S. court for millions in damages. Shell Nigeria maintains that it is now helping the Ogoni people with hospitals and schools and doing its best to mitigate the environmental damage caused by its oil exploitation activities.

But Shell, it seems, may not be the only Petro-giant to be outed for egregious corporate incivility. Another oil behemoth, Chevron, is being sued charging it ordered the murder of two Nigerian villagers in 1998. Filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Chevron lawsuit charges the company helicoptered soldiers5 to it’s Parabe oil platform in Lagos, then gunned two activists to death. The suit reveals still others were hauled away and tortured—some, for several weeks. “When they shot at me, I fell. One of them stabbed me! From there, I don’t know what’s happening to me,” said a surviving witness captured on tape by Pacifica journalist, Amy Goodman. Of the murders? In Nigeria, a Chevron Nigeria spokesman (also on tape) admitted who authorized the action: “We did; Chevron did.”

At last year’s shareholder’s meeting6, Goodman confronted Chevron’s CEO, Kenneth Derr:

Goodman: “Have you officially demanded that they not shoot protestors on your site?” Chevron: “I don’t know if we’ve officially demanded, but it goes without saying... that nobody...”

Goodman: “Will you officially demand it?”

Chevron: “No! I mean, that’s ridiculous! OK, next question, please.”

As in the past, the present, and with Derr’s bright promise for the future, interfering with the ebb and flow of petrodollars could indeed be irreparably damaging to one’s health.

-Harrison

A Vilage in Texas is Getting Back its Idiot

(Originally Published in 2000, after the Supreme Court oficially "selected" the next President)

In 2000, my Harvard-educated, WASP uncle in Connecticut said, "I'm not voting for the man, I’m voting for his team". Perhaps the original sentiments of some 40 million Republicans who surely couldn't, with a straight face, exclaim greatness in then-candidate G. W. Bush . As one who’s recently fled the GOP, I've never been unclear that sheer buffoonery, laziness, intellectual silly putty, and a torn cowboy hat may not be the hallmarks of presidential greatness. This was well known before Michael Moore's cinematic scimitar was skillfully riposted in the form of "Fahrenheit-911". Indeed, America's first DUI President rendered unconscious at the hand of a mere unsalted pretzel—daily dangles the keys to 10,000 thermonuclear warheads. His VP, Swingin' Dick Cheney , also boasts not 1 but 2 DUIs.

Eeeeek! It's BushCo. led by a uni-browed nitwit; America's first subliterate leader, knuckle-walking across the world stage. The spectacle makes even the homeless guffaw. Third graders whisper of cooties. Garbage men yearn for a similar Yale diploma.*

At any given conference, world leaders cringe when the lips of our Presi-dunce part in preparation for confused air to escape. G. Dubya then leans forward only to splutter saliva bubbles and an odd glottal noise like a child's deflating balloon. With crinkled brow, the Great Warrior recalibrates his mind for speech. Suddenly, from that dilating meatus known technically as his mouth, out come a gurgle, a hiccup, then a wheeze of disconnected words. For tips in oratorical wizardry, surely the man could have consulted Dutch Reagan before the Gipper's doleful admittance to the morgue. Many an experienced neurosurgeon would drool at the opportunity to observe, under microscope, the president's fine brain as it manufactures these meaningless word salads. Imagine the barely visible blips on the lobotoscope as we observe real-time synaptic misfires in which that dormant organ betwixt his hair-sprouting earholes fizzles and farts from nowhere to nowhere.

Poor POTUS (President of the United States ) reportedly is unable even to maneuver through the daily newspaper unassisted. His staffers are charged with reducing complex and often highly nuanced issues down to several lines on an index card then to be handed over to Him. A quick glance and our man in DC says he then draws instructions "from above". Could it be?

Dubya's dramatic, yet humble pipeline to the ' Lord (Jesus/God? Both?) surpasses even the infallible talents of the mystical Pope, who, himself, must feel spiritually dwarfed by this Chosen One. In truth, the only other globally-known despot gifted with direct cell service to God happens to be the furry-faced Bin Laden.

Are both practicing fundamentalists? The word fundamentalism comes from the root, fun·da·ment, which means ass or buttocks. Fundamentalism, therefore, is essentially nothing more than assthink.

Alas, Team POTUS is comprised of the most sinister collection of knaves any cracked-out Shakespeare could imagine. Macbeth? Child's play! Hamlet? Dog doo! The Team has come to stand almost exclusively for special interests, secrecy, and fierce political coercion... not to mention, frenzied efforts to Constitutionally catapult any two gay hairdressers, caught on a date, back to the pre-civil rights luxuries afforded the common negro. Even the nocturnal stupors of the late Richard Nixon , in his most bug-eyed power-hungry state while vomiting bourbon-soaked emesis over the White House piano like a gargoyle Ed Sullivan could never envision slipping into a catch-me-if-you-can bullet-proof negligee like the Patriot Act. Through it, the Mr. Bush has classic sovereign immunity: ' The King can do no wrong' .

Via the "official media", he beseeches his public to rove a watchful eye across their neighbors all potential terrorists, don’t you know. Not one of the Republic's vaunted TV anchors dares practice reportage and challenge the simian stutters of the Mr. Bush hiding quietly behind his silken American flag .

Am I being unduly unkind? Or can it be, as Mr. Bush so adamantly avers, that the great terrorist menace is really the hundreds of millions of Homer Simpsons , endlessly grunting at the trough of feckless consumerism while their leader's mighty peek-a-boo proctoscope is applied so enthusiastically by Attorney General Strangelove ? Yes, the Lord's Eunuch our statue-draping, nipple-covering, self-castrating Evangelist, who not only delights in phone-tapping 24/7, but also spying on every chatroom, email, fax, Cell, PDA, credit card purchase, library checkout, and magazine subscription. All this is zealously executed with the full capabilities of the supercharged Rumsfeld Pentagon delivering nonstop freedoms at the end of an electrified cattle prod.

Leading Team POTUS, as Grand Dragon, is none other than the foul-mouthed Darth Dick Cheney. As CEO of oil giant Halliburton, Mr. Cheney cunningly sold Iraq $73 million in oilfield services between 1997 and 2000, then tactically planned for Halliburton to receive a bill ion dollars...

(that's $1,000,000,000.00) a month (right now) in government/taxpayer contracts for the Iraq invasion. Ironically nicknamed Dick, the VP publicly ejaculated all over Senator Leahy, during an official Senate photo shoot, with a crazed Go fu*k yourself when Sen. Leahy inquired about the VPs $tock options and deferred compen$ation packages currently rolling in from current Halliburton conquests.

What is perhaps most shocking is the level of mean-spirited machismo that would make even Machiavelli's eyeliner run. The front cover of mad cow investigator John Stauber ' s latest book, Banana Republicans, boasts the prescient slogan: You're either with the Republican Party or you're with the Terrorists! There's no middle ground! Does that imply my 94 year-old grandmother is secretly diddling Bin Laden? If so, we can only hope the Bush legal team actually does successfully maneuver a way to cancel those inconveniently competitive November elections, lest granny-bin-laden vote the "wrong way" between naps and Oprah.

Had Thomas Jefferson foreseen what sort of ghastly usurpations would spring from our Founding Fathers' gritty debates come that memorable November of 2000, he might have characterized the presidential title more as ' His Evangelical Excellency, Most High Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Mesopotamian Council of the 33rd degree and Lord Conquering Military Pontiff of the United Christian Colonies of Petropolis and Supreme Leader Forever .

Yup. POTUS of Petropolis . When surrounded by his thuglike team, it does make for a delightful show though; rather like a lithium-sedated Chihuahua in the midst of a dozen Pit Bulls. The whole bunch of freakish zealots furiously keeping the world whipped up in an unstable frenzy in order to see pals profit off of 150 year-old combustion engine technology. To wit: it' s the Coalition of the Drilling (or is it the Killing?), endlessly sucking gooey black liquid dinosaur shit out of a 168,927 square mile sandbox.
