LA Schools receive M16s, grenade launchers and a tank. Meanwhile, LAPD ramps up warrantless surveillance with “free” Pentagon military-grade weaponry, including taser-firing drones and $61M in body-cams.
Hamid Khan, an organizer with the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, talks with Cary Harrison about the use of drones for law enforcement and the encroaching militarization of the Los Angeles public school system.
“I am deeply concerned and reject the Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) surveillance, spying, and infiltration programs such as the
Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) initiative enforced through Special Order (SO) 17 and the iWATCH – See Something, Say Something program.
The LAPD SAR program creates a culture of fear and suspicion, criminalizes innocent behavior, promotes racial profiling, invades privacy, is not
evidence based, and wastes resources.”
